KILAUEA FISH MARKET- KAUAI, HAWAII

photo2.jpg
A couple years ago I was in bed watching Food Network’s “Best Thing I Ever Ate”. Marc Summers visited the Kilauea Fish Market in Kauai, and the best thing he ever ate was the Ahi Tuna Wrap from there. I remember watching and thinking to myself, ” I have to go there” and right away wrote it down on my food bucket list. Sure enough, I ended up visiting Kauai recently and made it my top priority. You would think enjoying the beautiful scenery of Kauai would be first on my list of things to do, but food is always the first thing on my mind lol. Let me just say, I can see why Marc said this was the best thing he ever ate. It was about a 15-20 minute cab ride from our hotel (The St. Regis Princeville), and I had to go twice it was so good. It’s literally a shack in the small town of Kilauea, located on a desolate lot with roosters and chickens running around everywhere. There are a couple high top tables outside to eat, no inside seating- so don’t expect anything fancy. After we had lunch there, we visited the Light House, and took a helicopter ride over the island of Kauai. It was the perfect day. Check out a piece of my Kauai experience…
KILAUEA’S AHI TUNA WRAP
Oriental sesame dressing, cabbage/cucumber/carrot slaw & brown rice
Didn’t expect it to be that good but it was. The ahi was fresh and seared warm, and the sauce made the wrap- it was incredible. It was creamy and blended everything in the wrap together. It was juicy, warm and dripping with sauce. I wish I could have bottled up the sauce and taken it home. I loved it because it felt light and fresh. It was so simple yet so delicious. This is a must have if you are in Kauai.
MAHI MAHI FISH TACOS
Two soft flour tortillas filled with grilled mahi mahi, homemade salsa, shredded cheese, cabbage, and a garlic cilantro cream sauce
My friend and I split the fish tacos and ahi wrap. The fish tacos were amazing as well. The cilantro garlic cream sauce was so flavorful and really gave the taco a flavorful edge. There is something about the sauces at Kilauea Fish Market- they are delicious and really made things flavorful and unique. We ordered the exact same thing when we visited the second time around. We loved them both.
Down the street from the Kilauea Fish Market was a light house on a bluff over looking the sea. Our driver stopped to take us there because of the beautiful views.
After lunch at the fish market, we took a helicopter ride over the entire island of Kauai. We went through the mountains, the valleys, and the Na Pali Coast. We saw several waterfalls in the middle of the island that you can only see by air. It was pretty spectacular. I highly recommend doing this when you are in Kauai. It’s pricey, but worth it. You learn a lot about the island and the views were breathtaking. It’s such a beautiful island. I already miss Kauai….
