I love summers in Europe. After I went to Italy this summer I went to Greece for a few days and visited Santorini and Mykonos. I had been to both places before in 2010, but wanted to go back again because I loved it. This time around was a different experience, but was still amazing in its own way.
I flew from Naples, Italy straight to Santorini. I stayed in Fira for two nights and in between Fira and Oia for the other two nights. If I went back again, I would have stayed in Oia instead of Fira. Fira is great to go out for a night or visit for a day but the best place to stay in Santorini is Oia in my opinion. Oia is picture perfect- everywhere you look is like a postcard. There are charming shops, restaurants and boutique hotels on the cliffside and the views are incredible. Make sure to venture down the steps to the sea and have dinner by the water. There is a killer lobster pasta at the Sunset Tavern.
I literally have a Greek gyro every day when I’m in Greece. I crave them. There are definitely places better than others and sometimes I get a really good one and sometimes not- it’s kind of hit and miss.
I have very mixed feelings about the donkeys in Santorini. You can pay to ride a donkey up the Caldera, and it’s a signature thing to do in Santorini. I know it’s a cultural thing as well, but I felt very bad for the donkeys once I saw them in person. It was over 100 degrees and they were herded up and down the steep mountain all day with tourists paying to ride them. I am sensitive about any animal being in captivity. Below are the pictures of the beautiful donkeys, and the second picture were the donkey herders.
I stayed at a beautiful boutique hotel between Fira and Oia called Aenaon Villas Santorini. It is situated on the edge of the island’s caldera with breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea. The property is intimate and private, consisting of 7 unique, luxury villas. The beautiful clean white lines against the royal blue waters and sky really epitomize the beauty of Greece, while staying true to traditional Cycladic architecture. Aenaon Villas is picturesque and a unique place to stay in Santorini.
